The temperature varies greatly throughout the year, rising to nearly 1°C in the summer and dropping to nearly -4°C in the winter. The average temperature in January is below -40°C, the lowest of any capital city in the world, and so it is known as the "coldest capital city in the world."
In July 2021, Chinggis Khaan International Airport opened as the New Ulaanbaatar International Airport, 7 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Construction of an airport railway linking the airport terminal building with the city of Ulaanbaatar is also planned.
