Unique learning

Build the foundation in the first year, and then from the second year
Choose from four specialized majors

In the first year, students will clarify their own specialization while acquiring liberal arts and university study skills, basic knowledge of psychology, and a scientific perspective on the human mind and behavior. From the second year, students can choose a specialized major such as "Clinical Psychology," "Criminal Psychology," "Disaster Psychology," or "Industrial and Consumer Psychology" and further deepen their specialized knowledge and skills. However, they are not limited to one major and can also study subjects from other majors across the board.

Learning psychology through experience

One of the distinctive learning experiences offered by the Department of Psychology is overseas experiential learning. For example, in a program where students visit police stations in Taiwan to learn about crime prevention systems, they also meet with active police officers, focus on the differences in the characteristics of crime and crime prevention measures in Japan and Taiwan, and provide an opportunity to discuss the issues facing each other. Learning psychology through crossing the language barrier and understanding each other's social environments and cultures from the perspective of crime prevention is a valuable experience.

Graduated from Kashima Asahi High School

A legal technician is someone who provides counseling to juveniles who have committed delinquent or criminal acts, helping them to prevent recidivism and reintegrate into society. The teacher of "Correctional Psychology" is a former legal technician. In class, we used real-life examples to consider how to understand and interact with the psychology of juveniles. For example, take the case of Juvenile A, who committed a drug-related crime. Based on information such as age, family structure, home environment, upbringing, and personality, we first explored "why he did it," and then considered "how to help him get back on his feet." It was fascinating to use criminal psychology and clinical psychology to come up with my own answer.

Psychological skills are useful in all aspects of police work, including interrogations and interpersonal relationships.

Graduated from Aichi Prefectural Bihoku High School

I prepare for and administer the police officer recruitment exam and support successful candidates until they enter police academy. It's rewarding to see my future colleagues overcome their anxieties and work hard at physical training and studying. At university, I primarily studied the psychology of criminal perpetrators and the factors that lead to crime. When I worked at the police box, I conducted interrogations based on the psychological state and characteristics of suspects. In the future, I would like to use psychology in criminal investigations and crime prevention activities in the Community Safety Division or Criminal Investigation Division. I also feel that psychology is useful for building good interpersonal relationships. Police work cannot be done alone, and there are many situations where we need the cooperation of prefectural residents and related organizations.
At Kansai University of International Studies, the faculty and staff are always there to support students, and it was an environment where I could consult with them about anything. When I took the police officer recruitment exam, there was also a teacher who gave me interview guidance, which was very reassuring.
