■ Please tell us about your current research theme (or field of specialization) and the reason why you decided to pursue this field of specialization.

I specialize in cultural anthropology, which aims at deep understanding of different cultures.

The reason why I chose to study this specialty is because it gives me an opportunity to learn about different cultures and think about things from a very broad and global perspective through the field work that I actually do.

Specific research themes include research on the promotion of tourism and the protection and transmission of cultural heritage.

■ Profile

When I was in high school, I studied abroad in a village of 400 people in the state of Texas in the United States, where there was no Japanese. After that, I fell in love with America and went to an American university until my second year of college. After that, I became interested in China, and after graduating from university, I lived in China for three years and started researching cultural anthropology.

Currently, I am interested in countries and regions in East Asia and Southeast Asia such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Singapore, and I am developing a wide range of research activities related to tourism and cultural heritage.

■ Message to high school students

If you want to acquire the ability to think and act on a global scale, I think you should not only improve your English skills, but also acquire another language that has international influence, such as Chinese. In addition, it is important to have a flexible way of looking at things that is not overly bound by Japanese customs and common sense, and to acquire basic knowledge about foreign countries (especially Asian countries that have a close relationship with Japan). As an international university, our university has the best environment because we have faculty members who support you in acquiring such skills.

■ Themes that can be cooperated such as lectures and interviews

Lectures and interviews on cross-cultural understanding and fieldwork methods and perspectives are possible.Lectures and interviews are also possible on themes such as education, tourism, gender, medical care, arts and performing arts, religion, and cultural heritage from a cultural perspective.I specialize in Chinese studies (including Taiwan), so I can talk about Chinese culture and society.
