■ Please tell us about your current research theme (or field of specialization) and the reason why you decided to pursue this field of specialization.
In college and graduate school, I majored in English linguistics (phonetics and phonology), which studies the mechanisms of English sound. After graduating from graduate school, I taught English as a high school English teacher. In the course of teaching, I became interested in the mechanisms of language acquisition in children who are not good at English, and I taught myself English teaching methods and second language acquisition. The experiences above led to my current job as a university instructor (researcher).
Currently, I am conducting research limited to classroom learning environments, looking at the mechanisms of how learners who have already acquired their native language (Japanese) acquire English (this is called "Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA)"). Specifically, I am conducting research into "metalinguistic competence," or how to utilize native Japanese to improve English knowledge (sound and vocabulary) and English proficiency.
I am also interested in learning science, which studies and visualizes the effects of education, and international education policies such as CEFR and OECD Education 2030.
■ Profile
I am in charge of the Elementary English Course (English education for elementary and junior high schools) at the Kansai International University Faculty of Education. At our school, I teach the English that children and students learn and the English teaching methods for teaching that English.
In my previous job, I worked as a high school English teacher for 21 years, at public high schools, national university high schools, and private high schools.
At the National University High School, I was involved in the Super Global High School (SGH) project as the head of the English department for three years. In the school-wide mid-term evaluation (third year), we received the "highest rating" that is given to only five schools in the country, and I was overwhelmed with emotion.
■ What was the best thing about working as a high school English teacher?
I was able to see the growth of the children I was involved with.
Seeing my children grow in front of my eyes makes me happy to be involved in education. I always feel that education can change people. It's never too late to have the chance to change your life.
■ Message to high school students
Our Faculty of Education is a university where you can aim to become both an elementary school teacher and a junior high school English teacher!
Be passionate about the things you can only do now, and keep challenging yourself!
Also, immerse yourself in something you like. That will lead to the research topic you want to tackle at university.
If you would like to learn more about "education" such as childcare, kindergarten, elementary school, and junior high school English, or "welfare" such as social welfare and child welfare, please come and study with us at our school. If you would like to study the mysteries of English "language", become an elementary school teacher with strong English instruction skills, or become a junior high school English teacher with good English pronunciation, why not come and study with us in our Elementary English Course?
In our Faculty of Education, we have teachers who are passionate about education and seniors who you can rely on when you have trouble with your studies, so you can live a safe and secure school life. Please pursue and embody our motto of learning: "If you try, you can do it! You can do more!!"
