■ Please tell us about your current research theme (or specialty field) and why you decided to pursue that specialty field.

I was aiming to become a regular class teacher at an elementary school, but in my seventh year of employment, I became a homeroom teacher for a special needs class. I thought one by one about what kind of skills I should develop to suit each child in front of me, and what methods I could use to do so, and I created my own teaching materials and made progress. There were many things that didn't go well, and there were many days when I was worried. However, when I saw the children enthusiastic about the tasks I had created, and when I saw their happy faces when they were able to complete the tasks, I felt very fulfilled. I realized the fun of education where there are no fixed things to teach or teaching materials.

■ Profile

For 37 years, I have been involved in "education" for children with regular classes, intellectual disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, sickly, hearing loss, multiple disabilities, etc. at elementary schools, special needs schools, and boards of education. As I thought about my long life, I began to think about the importance of using what I learned in school after graduation to live a fulfilling life in my own way. In order to create a place where people with various differences can live together, and to increase the number of human resources in the fields of education, welfare, and society that make this possible, we must understand and respond to the differences of each person. I became a university teacher because I wanted to spread the word about fun.
