[Center for Global Education] Global Study II (Myanmar/2017 Winter Yangon ②) Activity Report 1

Since February 2018, 2, we have been conducting field research to explore social safety and security in Yangon, Myanmar.

In recent years, Myanmar has been undergoing transformation and development in all aspects, and is a country that is attracting attention from the world. The social system underwent a drastic change from long-term military rule to a democratic state. While economic development is expected, there are still many problems such as poverty, ethnic conflicts, natural disasters, systems, laws, and undeveloped social infrastructure. We learned the basic knowledge of this country in our preparatory study before leaving Japan.

We felt that we needed to know more about the current situation in Myanmar, so we first visited the Japanese Embassy on February 2th.So, I asked him to talk in detail about how the police are changing, especially from the perspective of crime prevention and safety in Yangon. From the cases of crime victims and traffic accidents, I learned a lot about how people try to keep themselves safe, which I would not have been able to obtain without visiting the site.

On February 2th, I visited the JICA Myanmar office. In the morning, we heard about how assistance is being provided for Myanmar, which faces many challenges such as poverty, sanitation, and education. In the afternoon, we first talked about the security situation in each region of Myanmar and in Yangon city, and then about JICA's projects centered on disaster prevention.

During these two days, the students showed a strong interest in the topics that they did not understand in the preparatory study, and many questions came up.Also, in my free time, I went out into the city and took walks to confirm what I had learned from the actual situation of the city.

On February 2th, I visited a Japanese cemetery in the suburbs of Yangon. We laid wreaths for those who died in World War II and observed a moment of silence, imagining what those who died in this country during and after the war wished for Japan and Myanmar.
