[Center for Global Education] Global Study II (Philippines/2017 Winter Diliman) Activity Report 2

I will report on activities at an elementary school in Boracay, a small island in the Philippines. At this elementary school, exposure to "Asian culture" is part of the education, and the participants were divided into groups and mainly visited classrooms for 5th and 6th graders to introduce Japanese culture.

Each group prepares activities on the theme of Japanese language, art, music, dance, and sports (games), and introduces them in English in front of the children in the classroom. Not only do we try to make the activities participatory as much as possible, but we also touch on the cultural background and brief history of the activities.

We made origami to make helmets from newspapers brought from Japan and had them actually wear them, and we taught them katakana and asked them to write their names in katakana on paper airplanes they made themselves. For Japanese songs, I prepare lyrics cards in romaji and sing along while explaining the meaning in English.

The children were very enthusiastic about participating in the activities, and when they left, they kept saying "thank you" and waving their hands. The participants received a certificate from the principal as a token of their gratitude, and it was a very meaningful activity.
