So let's get started with Reflection Day.
For all of you, this will be your first Reflection Day. "Reflection Day" is not something that every university does.I think there are probably about 10 universities nationwide. If it's the university that your friends are attending, I think they'll just distribute guidance and report cards around this time. The reason for starting the Reflection Day at Kansai University of International Studies is that although students have a wealth of experience in being evaluated by others, they do not fully understand what is meant by "self-evaluation." Because I thought the mechanism was the problem.
I think that Japanese people have an image of being evaluated by others, and have a very strong impression that evaluation is something they don't like.Today, I think there are people who are happy and sad when they see the returned report card. Some people say, "Oh, good!" Others say, "Why is my rating so low?"No matter how many times you repeat it, you won't be able to evaluate it.
However, when you actually go out into society, you will eventually find yourself in a position to evaluate other people. What is evaluated by people and what is not evaluated? You can't grow if you keep trying without knowing. Therefore, we decided to create a "rubric" at our university. And in "Reflection Day", answers with a rubric evaluation are returned, and it is possible to self-evaluate "what did you do and how far you got this grade".
Unlike other universities, the teachers at our university do not simply assign points to grades, but are also required to explain why they are given points. This may be a bigger burden than teachers at other universities. However, I think it is even more important for those in the Faculty of Education who are about to become teachers.Of course, even in the private sector, and everywhere else, there is a reputation. We are doing this retrospective work in order to make them understand that evaluation is not a bad thing, what was evaluated and how they are now.
This year, our university is celebrating its 20th anniversary.Kansai International University originated from Kansai Jogakuin Junior College, which started as a junior college in Miki City in 1987. It opened in Miki in 1998 and is 20 years old this year. After various events to commemorate the founding, we will hold an official ceremony on Saturday, September 9th.
Kansai University of International Studies was originally established by Hamana Gakuin Educational Corporation, so it shares the same educational philosophy with Kansai Jogakuin Junior College and Namba Ainozono Kindergarten.
"Iai Ien", the founder Misao Hamana celebrates the founding anniversary of Ii Ien with the desire of the school to become people who are considerate and accepting of others. It comes from the teacher's birthday. However, it is not strictly possible to hold the commemorative event on that day, so this week will be the anniversary week, and today, just before the anniversary ceremony, we will have everyone listen to the symposium.
What I need to talk about today is that when you get your grades, answers, and reports back, I want you to look at them and reflect on them.Good or bad, you can't get enough of your strength even if you're happy and sad. After knowing why and where they went well and what the challenges are, they will look back and set their next goals. That's what "Reflection Day" is all about. At that time, I try to talk at each grade and campus in order to provide materials for retrospectives that are not just answers.
I am sending out one document today.I would like to discuss this matter based on this material.
The title is "Society changes, education changes, careers change ~Welcome to the 20th anniversary of the university~".Until now, you may have basically imagined your future by looking at your parents' backs and your grandparents, but this kind of future is no longer waiting for you.
The color diagrams in the materials are Linda Gratton's PowerPoint materials.Fortunately or unfortunately, you entered this university at the turn of the times. In terms of Kansai University of International Studies, you are the 20th generation. In terms of a bigger change, it is the era of “Society 5.0”.This means that we are entering the fifth stage in human history.
The first stage is the age without letters.Hunting culture, that is "Society 1". "Society 1.0" is an agricultural society. I'm sure you all have a vague idea of what "Society 2.0" is, but in Japan, it was 3.0 years ago, after the Meiji Restoration.Industrial society, this is "Society 150".I think that most of what you have learned in social studies and education up to high school ends here. "Society 3.0" is an information society, right now.
And "Society 5.0" is coming soon. "Society 5.0" is an era in which the virtual world and the real world cross over, economic development and social problems are being solved.
For example, do you remember how many years ago smartphones that you use on a daily basis were invented?Smartphones came out 11 years ago. This year is the 11th year, and I think that smartphones have "4G" (four generation). Four generations have changed in 11 years. The era of 4G is just around the corner. If you think about your life, I think you can imagine how big the times will change in the future.Linda Gratton says that her life so far has been a period of education until the age of 5 and a period of work from the age of 25 to 25, as shown in the figure above the material. Some people enter society at the age of 60 or 22, but she retires at 18.I think that the life you imagine when you look at your close relatives and family is close to this.
However, it is said that the future expected in the future will definitely look like the figure below. You will go back and forth between "Explorer", "Independent producer" and "Portfolio stage".
"Explorer" is the time to think about your own way of life, the time to reacquire knowledge and skills, and such a time will definitely come.
Why?It is impossible for you to complete your life or make a living with just the knowledge and skills you have learned during your four years of university life, and that is why you will need to relearn. .
And the second stage "Independent producer" is to be engaged in productive activities in an independent position without being hired by an organization. In other words, it means that a way of life will appear quite normal, rather than just getting a job in an organization.
The third stage is the Portfolio stage, where different activities are carried out in parallel.
This time, a policy was issued to allow national civil servants to work concurrently.Until now, civil servants were not allowed to earn money by doing other jobs.Teachers who are civil servants should not receive money for part-time tutoring.Civil servants are called ``public servants'' or ``public servers,'' and since they serve the public, they were not supposed to earn any other income, but that is about to change.
Furthermore, the birthrate is declining and the population is aging. This is the problem right in front of you.I will talk about it in my anthropology class, but in the future there will be a labor shortage. Moreover, when you yourself become an elderly person, the number of younger generations will decrease, and old age will be difficult.Life expectancy is increasing and the era of 100-year lifespans is approaching, so if the retirement age is assumed to be between 60 and 65, it will be more than 35 years since retirement.
While such an era awaits, more natural disasters will occur everywhere.I have experienced 4 natural disasters in half a month.First of all, I was in Toyama on August 8st and planes and trains were stopped due to a bomb cyclone. There was a typhoon in Kansai on September 31th, an earthquake in Sapporo in the early hours of September 9th, and a typhoon in Taiwan last weekend. This sort of thing happens routinely. There is no city in the world that does not face natural disasters. The surrounding roads were flooded, and about half of the traffic lights disappeared in Amagasaki.Almost all of Sapporo had disappeared. The other day, when I went to give a lecture in Miyazaki, Miyazaki was once said to be hit by Typhoon Ginza, but this year the west side of Kyushu suffered a lot of damage, while the east side was safe.On the other hand, typhoon damage is increasing from Shikoku to Kansai.
Natural disasters are unpredictable and cannot be prevented.Society is no longer what you have learned in textbooks.
Next is the second theme of the material, "Education is changing."The curriculum will change significantly. There will be more and more areas that cannot be covered by the know-how of the veteran teachers of the Faculty of Education. It seems that it is a triple whammy at the site.
First of all, "English".Can you speak?
The second is ethics. "Morality" can be a textbook and become a subject. Can you rate good morals, good ethics and bad ethics? Can you give me points? This is another big challenge.
The third is programming learning. The other day, we held a symposium at our university. Many people came, but the ones who were interested were parents and children.I am more interested than a school teacher. It's not a subject.Programming doesn't teach you how to write computer programs. It's a step-by-step study. In order to reach such a goal, what kind of logic should be established and what kind of design should be done? The content of programming learning is whether it can be reached.Guys, can you do that?
As the course of study has changed in this way, universities have come to be strongly required to explain to society what they have become able to do through university education.
Under such circumstances, careers and exits will also change. Some people want to get a job in a private company, and I think some people want to become a teacher. The method of job hunting may also change from hiring new graduates all at once.I think that will probably change.
You may think that it is still in the future, but the job hunting you are doing now is definitely different from the job hunting you are doing now. There are also talks of recruiting new graduates and existing graduates in the same way, or hiring all year round.Larger companies want to start job hunting sooner so that foreign-affiliated companies don't get ahead of them.
However, some local medium-sized companies are closing down due to lack of workers. It's very diverse.
What should you do in the meantime? We also ask everyone to do internships, and internships are becoming a part of our recruitment activities.Companies that can pick and choose who to hire are always watching you.At internship information sessions, of course, people who are sleeping or who have a bad attitude are checked, and do you hold a writing utensil and listen to others? I'm starting to see the place too.
Employment agreements are also changing. What will happen if I get a job?No, it doesn't matter now.Only 50% of men in their 3s are already working at their first employer. There will be more changes from now on.Getting a job is not the goal.Passing the recruitment exam is not the goal.
Then what should I do.What kind of basic skills can you acquire during your four years at university? It can't be helped that I haven't done the basic training to choose my own way of life without being swept away by the changes of the times. But there is still time. Please start now.
Next, "how to embody autonomy, social contribution, and understanding of diversity".At the beginning, I talked about the anniversary of the company's founding. “Iaiien”, to nurture people who are considerate and accepting of others. Twenty-one years ago, prior to the opening of the university, the late Professor Atsushi Murakami, the first president of the university, called me and said, "It's easy for us to make kindergarteners understand this, but let's recreate 'Iai Ien' so that university students can understand it. When I was asked to think of an explanation, I came up with the words "autonomy," "social contribution," and "understanding of diversity."
What does "Iaiiyuan" mean?Let's do something not only for ourselves but also for others and society. And accept that there are people with values and cultures different from yours. In addition, you can live actively while self-controlling yourself. The place where such people gather is "Iaii-en", and it is still the educational goal of Kansai University of International Studies. When we created the KUIS Learning Benchmark in 2006, we added "communication skills" and "problem-solving skills."We believe that these forces are universally underpinning your foundation, 20 years ago and always.
I also made a learning route map.Why did you create a class called “Evaluation and Practice”?Only our university does this.
I think that you will create your own learning route map in the "evaluation and practice" this autumn, instead of being given a plan by someone else.Create a learning plan for your future goals. And always review. You don't just have to make a plan.We have to modify that process and accumulate material for retrospectives.Reports and answers will be returned in PDF.Please keep a record of your own activities in your portfolio. They help you reflect on yourself and explain yourself to others.
No one lives life the way they want.Falling is never a bad thing.A stumbling block is an awareness.I want you to realize that if you walk carelessly, you will fall. Also, instead of repeating the same thing over and over again, I want you to think for yourself about how to learn from your mistakes, and make it your own experience. What is important is how you record what you have learned from your failures.
Twenty years ago, we changed the context of "Iaiweiyuan".When we look back at it 20 years later, our basic way of thinking and the skills we want everyone to acquire will not change.
But there are some important keywords. The first is global.Global studies are not meant to be done. What matters is what you try to absorb from it.
And safety and security are not free or of course.Secondly, if we think that this is not something that should be taken for granted, we must firmly recognize the value of safety.Everyone has a chance to qualify as a firefighter. This is a basic qualification.
The third is management.what is thisWhat do you do to make your place more comfortable?Management is not the same as economics or management. What can each of you do to raise the potential of the group or organization to which you belong? What do you think, what do you do, what do you look back on, and how do you incorporate it into yourself? We believe it is your responsibility to think about it, do it, and grow.
After this, we will hear from experts at the symposium.I am convinced that this is what it means to rediscover the value of having entered Kansai University of International Studies as a 20th class student who has reached the age of 20. (For 1st year students, Amagasaki Campus)
