Since February 2019, 2, we have been conducting field research to explore social safety and security in Yangon, Myanmar.

In recent years, Myanmar has been undergoing transformation and development in all aspects, and is a country that is attracting attention from the world. The social system underwent a drastic change from long-term military rule to a democratic state. While economic development is expected, there are still many problems such as poverty, ethnic conflicts, natural disasters, systems, laws, and undeveloped social infrastructure. We learned the basic knowledge of this country in our preparatory study before leaving Japan.

On the first day of the activity, we traveled around the city by bus and went to the market to learn about the town.I could feel the liveliness of the town as I saw not only locals but also many foreigners enjoying shopping at the shops crowded in the market.

The next day, I visited a Japanese cemetery on the outskirts of Yangon. We laid wreaths for those who died in World War II and observed a moment of silence, imagining what those who died in this country during and after the war wished for Japan and Myanmar.

After that, we visited a large shopping mall in a different area from the city center on the first day.It is equipped with modern facilities and services, and I witnessed that meticulous technology is being adopted for security along with economic development.

On the third day, we went out into the city again and walked around the popular markets and places of life to observe them.

It was a place that showed a completely different expression than a market or shopping mall crowded with tourists.I felt a great sense of vitality from the sight of people living in the area selling and buying various things, and at the same time, I learned about the current state of social infrastructure for hygiene, transportation, crime prevention, and disaster prevention.

Since coming to Myanmar, we have been surprised by the differences from Japan in various places, and we have been looking back and discussing at our dormitory every day to explore and understand the background of where those differences come from.

For the rest of the day, I'm not overwhelmed by the heat (the highest temperature is over 30 degrees every day!), and I'm getting more and more motivated to discover many things and go deep into Manai.
