This book is a study of actor education in traditional Chinese theater from the perspective of cultural anthropology.
Traditional performing arts are usually handed down through an apprentice system consisting of a master and a disciple. However, in the People's Republic of China, it is handed down through school education. This is because traditional performing arts have been positioned as propaganda arts for conveying political slogans to the public, and for that reason it is necessary to efficiently train a large number of practitioners.
Based on 20 years of fieldwork in China, this book analyzes the theme of what it would be like to transform traditional performing arts education from an apprenticeship system to a school system, using a rare traditional performing art called Qinchao as a case study. In addition, we are also analyzing the issues of protection and transmission of Qin-chao, which are now considered intangible cultural heritage research. This book is an unprecedented book on performing arts education research that provides new perspectives not only on performing arts education research but also on educational history research and cultural heritage research. .
