Have you ever used an English-English dictionary?A dictionary in which English words are explained in English. There are various levels for this as well, so you need to be careful when choosing it, just like with an English-Japanese dictionary. For example, we cannot use the dictionary that Americans use as a Japanese dictionary.Try to choose dictionaries made for foreign English learners.
Why an English-English dictionary?I explain the reason in detail at the open campus, so please join me on the day when I will be in charge of the mini lecture (6/13: face-to-face in the morning, remote in the afternoon). Here are some of them.
What is an apple? How would you answer in English?
For example, you might think of It's a fruit, red and round.
English-English dictionary description: a hard round fruit that has red, light green, or yellow skin and is white inside (LDCE)
In addition to red, the color is light green (blue in Japanese) and yellow. In Japanese culture, apples are red, so it's hard to come up with ideas for colors other than red. There were other words I knew but didn't come up with, such as skin and white inside. It's paraphrased in simple English, so you can explain it without thinking too hard.

In this department, English classes are conducted in English (=no translation into Japanese), so students are expected to practice thinking in English as much as possible.Even if you look up apple in an English-Japanese dictionary, you will only find the translated word "apple".It's just understanding English words with Japanese meanings, so you can't come up with English ideas.Being able to use an English-English dictionary will help you learn English, so that you can think in English and paraphrase easily. For details, please visit the Open Campus.
