On May 5th, Kobe Municipal Rokko Island High School Biology Club (28 students, 2 teachers) and Osaka Kyoiku University High School Hirano Campus Biology Club (1 students, XNUMX teacher) are engaged in activities to protect Genji fireflies. Under the guidance of Professor Eiji Yoshioka, the students learned about the ecology of fireflies in the Uji River, which runs through the Kobe Yamate Campus.
First, they learned about the environment of the Ujigawa River in Kobe and the condition of Genji fireflies that live there, and confirmed points to note when observing them in the field. After that, we moved to the site where fireflies live (the riverbed of the Uji River) and observed how the fireflies glowed.Although the number of fireflies that can be seen in the Uji River this year is considerably smaller than in previous years, I was able to observe them up close by actually wearing rubber boots and using a ladder to get down to the riverbed.
The High School-University Collaboration Center at Kansai University of International Studies (KIX) takes into consideration the intentions of high schools and develops programs in cooperation and collaboration.
