The Faculty of Sociology at Kansai University of International Studies is also working on community-based learning in addition to classes that address corporate and regional issues called PBL-type classes. You may think, "Aren't PBL classes the best now?" or "Isn't PBL classes enough?"
In fact, many universities have adopted practical learning to tackle issues facing companies and regions as PBL (project based learning, problem based learning) type classes. This kind of initiative is very good, and many of them are actually being adopted by the Faculty of Social Sciences.
In these classes, it is often seen that "students who did not stand out are active" and "students discover the fun of studying".As a teacher, I feel that this is a very good method.
On the other hand, the people on the ground make up for it by explaining things like "why did that project become necessary?" and "why did that issue arise?"At the Faculty of Social Sciences, we want to emphasize this “why” part.
"Why" is sometimes taught in university classes. But that's just what I was taught. What is important is the context of the problems and issues in society until they become the “why”. It is necessary. If we call the knowledge we are taught ``cold knowledge (textbook-like knowledge)'', we can call the knowledge learned in the field ``warm knowledge (fluid and chaotic knowledge)''. "Warm knowledge" is applicable.Flexible and fluid knowledge and experience are necessary in an increasingly complex society.
To that end, the Faculty of Sociology provides support so that students can actually go into the field and find out why.In a class called service learning, we actually go into the field and work in five areas (near the university, Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Nagata Ward, Kobe City, Amagasaki, and Tamba). We ask students to be involved in the community for a long time and to work on “never-ending PBL”.The following initiatives are not the end if you do them once, they will continue forever.I would like to develop “human resources who can be useful in the field” by finding problems by continuing activities and continuing to make efforts to solve them.
