I was invited to ``Manabi no Sato Mizuho'' in Hosokawa-cho, Miki City as a lecturer in the Health and Welfare Department of Miki University for the Elderly.I gave a talk to about 30 people on the theme of ``oral care to prevent dementia.''
In July of this year, a dementia treatment drug (recanemab) was officially approved in the United States. An application has been filed for approval to manufacture and sell the drug in Japan, and expectations are high for its use in the treatment of dementia. This time, I would like to talk about the prevention of dementia, starting with dementia treatment drugs.
There are several types of dementia, the most common of which is Alzheimer's dementia.Alzheimer's disease is caused by the accumulation of an abnormal protein called amyloid-β in the brain, and in recent years it has been discovered that the production of amyloid-β is promoted by periodontal disease bacteria. In other words, it is believed that Alzheimer's disease can be prevented if periodontal disease is properly managed.Additionally, periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults, and tooth loss is said to reduce chewing power and affect blood flow to the brain, leading to a decline in cognitive function. For these reasons, oral care that can manage periodontal disease is important in order to prevent dementia.
This time, we asked the participants to perform a periodontal disease self-check, and we talked for about 90 minutes about the importance of preventing periodontal disease and proper oral care methods, using videos. After watching the video, we took a quiz to review how to brush your teeth, and everyone was able to answer all questions correctly, and they listened intently to the lecture.I was born and raised in Miki City, and I was very happy to have this opportunity to give back and contribute to the health of the community that raised me.
