[Faculty of Psychology] Professor Nakayama of the Faculty of Psychology comments on Sankei Shimbun's investigation into school crime prevention in the event of a repeat of the indiscriminate mass murder at Ikeda Elementary School

2001Years6At the attached Ikeda Elementary School in8Children were murdered,13Following the incident in which 100 students and teachers were injured, elementary and junior high schools across the country began to implement measures to prevent the intrusion of suspicious individuals.20In a survey of designated cities about security cameras and auto-lock systems, which the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is recommending for their introduction, the Kansai region showed high prices across the board, but5There were also cities with less than 10% of the population, revealing regional differences in the sense of crisis.

Regarding these results, Professor Nakayama from the Faculty of Psychology commented, "This system has a certain effect in deterring intrusions into schools. Based on routine activity theory, increased surveillance directly leads to nipping crime in the bud, so elementary and junior high schools should quickly move forward with establishing such a system."
