On Tuesday, November 11th, our university conducted its 26 disaster prevention and evacuation drill at its Kobe Yamate Campus with the guidance and cooperation of the Kobe City Central Fire Department.
This year's evacuation drill began in Building 2 under the assumption that an earthquake had occurred at around 12:05 on the same day, originating from the Suwayama Fault, which had resulted in a fire in a research laboratory on the second floor of Building 2. Kobe City Central Fire Department, faculty and staff of the university, students, and resident security guards participated in the drill, which included evacuation training outside the campus building, and student volunteers with disaster prevention qualifications taking the lead in conducting safety confirmation training.
After the training, the Kobe Central Fire Department commented, "Today is just a training session, so you are mentally prepared, but we don't know when a real disaster will occur. If an earthquake occurs, first take shelter under a desk or other place, and make your own safety your top priority. It is also important to look in all directions as you evacuate, and be careful of falling objects from the building."
Fire drills using water extinguishers were conducted in the North Block (Buildings 1, 4, and 5) and Building 3. Students actively participated in the drills and listened attentively to the explanations on how to operate the fire extinguishers. Using the knowledge gained from this evacuation drill, we will continue to strengthen our disaster prevention measures and strive to create a safe and secure campus.
