A member of the local disaster prevention club "Chibo" and an active participant in extracurricular activities, from the Faculty of Education2We interviewed Shimizu Yuushin, a second-year student!
This time,2024Years10Month6We mainly spoke about his experience volunteering at the Amagasaki Citizens' Festival on the 25th.
Mr. Shimizu, you belong to the local disaster prevention circle "Chibo." What initially made you decide to join a volunteer circle?
Before joining Chibo, I participated in a volunteer program on the Noto Peninsula, which was my first opportunity to volunteer.
Up until then, I had participated in fundraising activities, but it was my first time actually meeting people in the disaster-stricken areas and doing something on the ground.
I participated thinking, "I wonder if I can do anything," but many people told me that even just helping by moving things out of the house was a huge help.
I went there for three days and two nights, and did volunteer work without even taking a bath, and experienced the same things that people in the disaster areas actually went through. I realized that actually experiencing it with my own body was an amazing experience.
Seeing my seniors doing well there made me think I might want to join Chibo.
I believe you participated in the Amagasaki Civic Festival as part of Chibo's activities, but what kind of activities did you do?
At the Amagasaki Citizens Festival, the main event is "Chibo"2The first-year students worked on the theme of "Making disaster prevention name tags."
For example, I thought that if a small child gets separated from their family in an earthquake, they could hang a name tag with some personal information on it, and an adult nearby could see it and use it to find their guardian.
We thought that decorating it with pictures and stickers would pique the children's interest and make it enjoyable, so we created it together with the children.
Having participated, are there any memorable moments such as fun or happy moments?
What was fun was that everyone from small children to elementary school students6I have had the opportunity to interact with a variety of children, including older children up to the age of 18.
Everyone was drawing unique pictures, and it was fun to look at them and help create them.
What made me happy was when parents said, "That's a great idea!" about this initiative.
When they asked us questions such as "What are you making these for?" we told them why we wanted to make disaster prevention name tags, and they responded, "We'd love for the children to carry these!" which made us very happy.
What would you say to other students who are undecided about whether to participate in volunteer work?
Once you try volunteering, you will realize that you can truly support a lot of people and experience firsthand what you can do.
There are so many people I can help by just taking a small action, so I would like everyone to experience it at least once.
Thank you Shimizu-san for your cooperation!
