[First-year seminar] Deepen your understanding of different cultures through interactions with international students from the Bekka program

In the first year seminar of the Department of Nursing, we planned to have students interact with international students, so that they would have the opportunity to increase their interest in others and develop a desire to know and learn by interacting with people who have different values and backgrounds from themselves. This time, we interacted with international students from the Bekka program who are studying Japanese with the hope of entering a Japanese university or graduate school. This project was made possible because there are many international students at our university.

At the exchange meeting, the Miki Campus Nursing Department1The students were connected to the Yamate Campus-based international students through a remote conference system, and they were divided into small groups to introduce themselves and exchange opinions. They freely discussed themes such as the culture and lifestyle of their home countries and their experiences in Japan.

At first, he seemed nervous.1Through repeated dialogue, the first-year students were seen to speak up and proactively share their thoughts, providing a valuable experience that allowed them to communicate with others beyond language and cultural differences. Through this exchange, the students realized the importance of interacting with others from diverse backgrounds, broadening their international perspective, and it was an opportunity to develop the foundations of "interest in others" and "empathy" required of nursing professionals.

Participated1Students from the first year classes shared their thoughts, saying, "I realized that what we think is normal may be different to others," and "It was a very valuable experience to be able to hear valuable stories from the international students."

In the future, the Department of Nursing will continue to provide opportunities for students to develop rich sensitivity and humanity through this type of learning and through interactions with many people.
