Special pre-lecture held by the Graduate School of Clinical Education Department: "The Possibilities of Online Classes for School-Refusing Children and Students"

Online classes open up new learning possibilities for children and students who are not attending school

The keynote speech was given by Masahito Moriyama (former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and visiting professor at our university), who first gave an overview of the current situation regarding school absenteeism in elementary and junior high schools. He then introduced the overall picture of the measures being implemented by the government to combat school absenteeism, and introduced the "COCOHe touched on the outline of the "Plan," focusing in particular on the possibility of online classes and the possibility of classes being held at home.ICTHe specifically introduced a system that recognizes learning activities using the internet as attendance in the school record, and an example of classroom lessons being delivered online (Fukuoka City), and stressed the importance of creating an environment where children and students who are not attending school can continue their studies outside of school.GIGABy promoting the school concept, we have been able to provide one device per student and significantly improve the internet situation in the classroom.ICTWhile touching on the enrichment of the environment, he also stated that experiencing and learning in real life is essential for learning.

Amagasaki City's challenge to become a "school with diverse learning experiences"

Next, Mr. Makoto Matsumoto (Mayor of Amagasaki) took the stage and reported on the current state of measures to combat school absenteeism, showing the trend in the number of children and students absent from school in the city. He then announced the establishment of a "school-type learning diversification school" in the Reiwa era, the first of its kind in a public school in Hyogo Prefecture.8Years4He introduced the current efforts he is making with the aim of opening the school in March, and stated that he wants to design a new type of school with a child-centered perspective and bold ideas.

During the Q&A session moderated by President Atsushi Hamana, Mr. Moriyama and Mr. Matsumoto carefully answered questions from both the audience and online participants from their respective perspectives. It was a fruitful session in which their passion for measures to combat school absenteeism and their strong feelings about the future of education that online classes will pave the way for were conveyed.

Many people, including those involved in education, local residents, and students, participated in this event, and we received many comments such as, "This was information that teachers should definitely know," "We were able to hear valuable stories," and "It was interesting to learn about the issue of school absenteeism from the national and city perspectives."


Our university has a Faculty of Education on the Amagasaki campus and is training many of the next generation of teachers. The knowledge gained from this open lecture will be a valuable learning experience for students aspiring to become teachers, providing insight into the challenges they will face in the field of education. Kansai University of International Studies will continue to work with the local community and society to create and contribute to opportunities to consider the future of education.
