[Service Learning Experience] "I want to teach children about disaster prevention in the future" - Interview with a student who participated in the "Disaster Prevention Children's Cafeteria"
S.S., a first-year student in the Department of Education and Welfare, participated in the Disaster Prevention Children's Cafeteria, a service learning program aimed at solving problems in the local community. She actively participated in each activity, and was always involved, paying close attention to the children who came to the cafeteria. This time, we spoke to S.S.!
Why did you decide to participate in the Disaster Prevention Children's Cafeteria program?
I often hear that there are many disasters in Japan, so I decided to participate in this event in the hope that when I become a nursery school teacher or elementary school teacher in the future, I would be able to teach children about disaster prevention.
What was the most memorable thing about your activities?
During the summer holidays, we held a children's cafeteria at the university twice, where we played games and made meals using Air Wrap to learn about disaster prevention. What made a lasting impression on me was when the children and adults said things like, "The games were fun," and "It was good to learn about disaster prevention."
What were some of the difficulties or confusions you faced during your activities?
Although not all students participated in the activities, more children came than we expected, and we found it difficult to keep an eye on each one.
Many local residents came to the Disaster Prevention Children's Cafeteria. What did you feel when interacting with the local people?
We distributed flyers and called out to the local children and adults, and many of them participated. Many of the comments we received said they wanted to know more about disaster prevention, so we thought it would be good to explain more in depth to everyone, rather than just what we already knew.
How do you plan to use this experience in the future?
In the future, when I become a nursery school teacher or elementary school teacher, I would like to be able to tell people about the many disasters that occur in Japan today and teach them how to prevent them.
Please give a message to students who are interested in this type of activity!
I have also participated in local children's cafeterias, and while I think what is done varies depending on the area, there are many good things about them, so I hope that they will incorporate some of the good things when they hold children's cafeterias at universities.
There are more children's cafeterias in the community than I thought, so I hope that many people will participate.
