A high school-university collaborative class titled "English Speech Techniques" was held at Amagasaki Oda High School
As part of our high school-university collaboration project, our university held a special class at Hyogo Prefectural Amagasaki Oda High School.
This time, we will be introducing the Faculty of International Communication at our university.Professor Mari KatayamaThe lecturer provided practical instruction on "English speech techniques" to develop high school students' "communication skills."

The first step to a good speech is to "imagination for the audience"
At the beginning of the class, Professor Katayama emphasized that "the most important thing about a speech is to create it with your audience in mind." He explained four specific points to keep in mind in order to reach the audience, rather than giving a self-centered speech.
- Sharing content and a sense of familiarity: Include stories that resonate with the listener and that they can relate to.
- Use simple vocabulary: Instead of using difficult words, choose clear language that everyone can understand.
- Conclusion-first structure: Attract the listener's attention by stating the conclusion you want to convey most at the beginning.
- Speaking clearly:
- The end of a declarative sentence should be lowered to give it a sense of calm.
- Deliberately create a pause to give the listener time to think.
- Stand tall and assume a confident posture.

Hands-on experience! A workshop to experience the power of communication
The second half of the class was a time for practicing how to immediately output the theories that had been learned.
The students actually spoke out loud and experienced how changing the intonation of the same phrase can change the other person's reaction. They were also taught tips on how to naturally look the other person in the eye when making eye contact, which can be stressful.
Although the students were nervous at first, their voices became stronger with each practice, and it was impressive to see them finally speaking English with confidence.
