【国際コミュニケーション学部】Improving CEFR in the Department of English at KUIS

    【2020年10月06日】

In the English Department at KUIS, our English curriculum is designed to help students achieve two goals in their English language learning: improve proficiency and communicativeness. The TOEIC test is used to measure proficiency and the CEFR scale is used to measure communicativeness.

    What is CEFR?
CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference and it was created in 2003 to measure communicative competence in any language. It has three divisions and six levels. The three divisions are Basic (A), Independent (B), and Proficient (C). Each division has two levels that include A1 and A2, B1 and B2, and C1 and C2. A1 is the most basic level and C2 is the most advanced level.

    Why is CEFR important?
CEFR can be used for all languages and is a common reference scale. CEFR is focused on communicative proficiency and includes all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). While many proficiency tests focus on knowledge of the rules of language, CEFR focuses on performance in communicative tasks and situations that are important in real life. It is helpful for both teachers and learners to assess communicative ability, create courses and curriculum, choose materials, and set goals.

    What is my CEFR level?
You can decide your level by reading the detailed descriptions and “can-do” statements. If you can successfully do all of the tasks for each skill, then you have achieved that level. You can use this link to give yourself an assessment:

How do I improve my CEFR level?
CEFR levels are usually a reflection of how much time you have studied the language. In order to improve your CEFR level, you need to study the language and try to use it in everyday situations as much as possible. As with any skill, the amount of time you spend practicing will be the biggest factor in how much you improve.
