National Health Insurance

The Japanese National Health Insurance is a system in which members contribute insurance premiums and help each other so that they can receive medical treatment with peace of mind when they are sick or injured. If you receive medical treatment at a hospital due to illness or injury, you will be responsible for 30% of the medical expenses if you present your health insurance card at the reception.
All international students must enroll in the National Health Insurance.
Once you have decided on a place of residence, apply for insurance at the city (ward) office of your place of residence.
In addition, you are required to present your health insurance card at the immigration office when you go through procedures such as extending your period of stay or changing your status of residence.

Updated annually in November. When you receive your updated health insurance card, please submit a copy to the Center for Global Education (International Exchange Division).

The insurance fee for international students is about 1 yen per year (although it varies slightly depending on the region). The amount of the premium and the timing of payment will be notified by a payment notice every year.National Health Insurance premiums are revised every year.If you have a low income in Japan in the previous year, your premium will be reduced if you apply. The method of calculating premiums for National Health Insurance differs from municipality to municipality, so please check with your local government office for details. Also, when you receive the “National Health Insurance Income Declaration Form,” fill in the required items and submit it to the city (ward) office.
