Graduation Benchmarks (2022)

Benchmarks Standards for the Attainment of Degree-Level Learning Goals

KUISs expects its undergraduate students to develop the following six skills and attributes by the time they graduate:

  1. An autonomous and independent disposition;
  2. An attitude of active service to the community;
  3. The capacity to understand and flourish in a diverse society and in diverse cultural contexts;
  4. The ability to discover problems and solve them;
  5. The skill to effectively communicate;
  6. The expertise to apply appropriate specialist knowledge and skills as needed.

In order to insure the attainment of these skills and attributes, the University has developed the following "KUISs Learning Benchmarks." KUISs supports students reach these goals by providing periodic opportunities to reflect on their mastery of university-level learning. In concrete terms, the University expects all of its graduates to attain at least a Level 3 mastery on all six of its key skills and attributes.

1. An autonomous and independent disposition:

To develop one's own goals and be able to have the necessary motivation and self-control to realize these ambitions.

While at KUISs, students will strengthen this competency through:
・Daily planning and self-reflection on one's own learning
・Integrating coursework with applied learning opportunities such as internships and practicums.
・ Practical learning through large-scale co-curricular events such as the School Festival
・ Deeper reflection on learning through semi-annual "Reflection Days"

2. An attitude of active service to the community:

To be able to act for the sake of others and contribute to larger society.

While at KUISs, students will strengthen this competency through:
・ Group work in classes;
・ Applied learning through KUISs' experiential education programs such as Global Studies (International Education), Community Studies (Service-Learning), internships and practicums;
・ Co-curricular learning such as through club activities, student government and the organization of school festival.

3. The capacity to understand and flourish in a diverse society and in diverse cultural contexts:

To act as a world citizen who understands the diversity of the culture and society of people throughout the world.

While at KUISs, students will strengthen this competency through:
・ Classes that prompt students to think about diversity issues;
・ Co-curricular programs such as Global Studies, Community Studies, internships and practicums;
・ Study abroad;
・ Interaction with people from different regions;
・ Interaction with people from foreign countries.

4. The ability to discover problems and solve them:

To discover problems and learn how to solve them through using evidence and developing critical thinking and decision-making abilities.

While at KUISs, students will strengthen this competency through:
・ Classes that emphasize problem finding and solving activities, reports and tests;
・ Experience with data surveys and other field work activities developed through Global Studies, Community Studies, internships and practicums;
・ Co-curricular activities such as student clubs, the student government, and school festivals where students learn to effectively engage other students, faculty members, and members of the community and local businesses.

5. The skill to effectively communicate:

To be able to exchange one's opinion and ideas clearly while also understanding the ideas and viewpoints of others regardless of national background.

While at KUISs, students will strengthen this competency through:
・Group work and discussion in class;
・ Interactions with fellow class members, teachers and members of the community through Global Studies, Community Studies internships and practicums;
・ Engaging other students, teachers, and members of the community and local business through extracurricular activities such as student clubs, the student government, and school festivals;
・ Intercultural communication while studying abroad.
