JACUE Award Announcement

On April 15, 2020, KUISs was informed that two monographs authored by members of the KUISs community were shortlisted as "selected" works by the Japan Association for College and University Education (JACUE). In total, four works were designated with the "JACUE Selection 2020" honor, making KUISs-related works one half of all works chosen for the year by the JACUE selection committee.

JACUE is a leading organization of higher education in Japan. Founded in 1979, it has been at the fore-front on the scholarship of Japanese higher education, particularly in regards to faculty development and learning and teaching issues.

Since 2017, the JACUE Selection series has recognized three to five works every year that it believes contributes to the reform and advancement of the field of Japanese higher education. As it states, through the selection and "broad introduction" of these "superior" works, the JACUE Selection series "aims to support effective university-level education practices and the reform of higher education." JACUE provided an abbreviated commendation of the KUISs work on their webpage (https://daigakukyoiku-gakkai.org/site/jacue-selection/selections/) Here is the translation in English:

1. Hamana, Atsushi (2018). Meeting the Challenges of Learning Outcomes-based Education: Education Reform from a Regional University. Toshindo

Reason for Selection (Abridged): This work manages to comprehensively interrelate both the developments in recent government educational policy with the actual challenges facing learning and education at the undergraduate level. The work looks at the issue of learning management within bachelor's degree programs from the standpoint of a leader of a private institution focused on advancing learning outcomes. For those interested in researching higher education or for those faculty and administrators directly involved with reforming higher education institutions, this is a beneficial work detailing the recent vagaries of higher education policy.

2.Kansai University of International Studies (2018). 20 Years of Creating a University Education System of Autonomous and Empowered Learning. Toshindoo

Reason for Selection (Abridged): This work provides a detailed summary of the pioneering education reforms Kansai University of International Studies has implemented over the last 20 years. Through a description of its past efforts to implement an institution-wide FD program and its systemic education reform efforts placing Active Learning, ePortfolio Assessment and Learning-Centered IR at the center of its education, one gets a detailed look at the implementation and promotion of practices that have become so important in higher education today. It should serve as a reference for faculty developers, institutional researchers and reformers of university organizations alike.
